We had a wonderful Sweet Basil crop this year. Actually, we have four kinds of basil in our little garden plot: Sweet Italian Basil, Lemon Basil, Cinnamon Basil and Thai Basil. Each has a slightly distinctive appearance and taste, and we enjoy them with our salads almost daily.
Since we’re enjoying the basil so much, I decided to look up its nutritional value. It is rich in antioxidants and is a good source of potassium, magnesium and vitamin K. It has more healing power than I knew. It speeds up wound healing, and it inhibits the growth of many disease-causing bacteria. It also helps lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and it may help ward off cancer. Wow!
Our little herb garden not only gives us visual pleasure in the yard and taste pleasure at the table, but it also promotes good health. What a wonderful treasure!
