I heard Dr. James Gordon speak on Self Care at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio last evening. He is the Founder and Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine at Georgetown Medical School. Known internationally for his teaching and his work around the world, his message is one that all Americans should hear. Self-care should be the heart of all health care. Unfortunately, self-care is at the outer periphery of health care for many Americans. While their bodies crave good care at home, too many rely on the hope that medicine and surgery will take care of them. Medicine and surgery are poor substitutes for the healthy food, good exercise, and meditative time our minds and bodies need every day. Unless we can make this paradigm shift as a nation, our nation’s health care system is headed for disaster. As Dr. Gordon emphasized, the health care track we are on today is simply not sustainable.
